Nowadays, a lot of people have become interested in knowing what the physician assistant job description is. They want to know more about this profession simply because it is one of the in demand jobs of today. It is also quickly growing as more and more hospitals and health care institutions are looking for people who can help carry the load of the doctor and at the same time assist in the many tasks of a physician. Let us take a look at the job description of a PA.
Patient Diagnosis.
Although it may depend upon the state that you are working in, PAs may be allowed in the diagnostics area of a health care institution. They can perform several tests and assessments to diagnose a patient as well as rule out other diseases and medical conditions. Although these diagnosis and other results of assessments will have to be reviewed by a doctor, they still can perform these things under supervision.
Patient Care.
Other areas of patient care such as obtaining the history of the patient can be gathered by the PA. Getting vital signs and other information is also their duty as well as documenting any signs and symptoms and other important data. They are also responsible for prepping up examination rooms as well as preparing for certain procedures. They can also assist the physician in any treatment performed to the patient.
Pharmacology.
Again, this may depend on the state that you are working in, but most Pas are allowed to prescribe medications and refill any medication bottles. May I just emphasize again that this is done under the direct supervision of a licensed doctor. You may want to check with your state laws on what your duties may or may not include, especially on the subject of pharmacology.
Administrative Functions.
The PA can also do some things when it comes to administrative functions. Setting up appointments, performing patient interviews, and keeping the patient’s records up to date is also a part of their many responsibilities. Keeping and storing patient’s files are also a part of their duty.
Financial Department.
The PA can also work in the financial department of a hospital or health care institution. Whether it is billing and collecting payments, billing insurance claims, bookkeeping, or filling our insurance forms, the PA is also knowledgeable on that.
Lab Activities.
The PA is also allowed to conduct laboratory examinations and test procedures on a patient. They can also carry the results as well as examine them and later on interpret them as a part of diagnostics procedures.
Apart from all these things, the PA’s duty also includes making sure that the patient is comfortable and relaxed. It may seem like the PA has a lot of duties on her hands, but if you try to look at the salary, it is well worth it.
